A little about us

First In Response - First In Care

In 2008, Medics First was founded on three core principles for delivering superior emergency care:

  • Build strong relationships throughout the healthcare community.
  • Hold paramedics to a higher standard.
  • Provide a better workplace to attract top professionals.
Since then, Medics First has grown to include a fleet of 10 ambulances and employ a team of over 40 paramedics, EMTs, and office staff members. We offer the latest medical technology in the hands of highly-skilled medics who are dedicated to providing compassionate care. Four full crews provide expert patient care, every hour of every day.

In August of 2019, Medics First was purchased by Advanced Medical Transport, a nationally-accredited and recognized regional Emergency Medical Services provider, based in central Illinois. As a member of the AMT family, Medics First will become Springfield’s first not-for-profit ambulance service, operated for community benefit, and guided by a community-based Board of Directors. why choose us

Our Equipment

Our ambulances are equipped with advanced life support (ALS) equipment that transmits vital information directly to the receiving hospital. This allows the Emergency Room to properly prepare for the patient’s condition and provide immediate care upon arrival. All of our ambulances are tracked and dispatched via GPS locator units and include onboard laptops. Medics First ambulances are continually being upgraded to leverage the latest technological advances.

Our Medics

Our nationally-registered or state licensed Paramedics and EMTs are highly trained and receive comprehensive continuing education. Both our service and our medical staff are regulated by the State of Illinois. To maintain our EMT licenses, we must complete 120 hours of approved continuing medical education in both adult and pediatric care. We are dedicated to exceeding those standards.

Many of our paramedics have also received additional training and certifications, including:

  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • PhTLS - Prehospital Trauma Life Support
  • PEPP - Pediatric Emergency Prehospital Professionals
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support
  • PHTLS - Prehospital Trauma Life Support
  • CCEMT-P Critical Care Certification

Q & A

What Number do I call for help?

In a true emergency, you should call 911. Call (217) 331-0053 for both emergency and non-emergency services. Sangamon County Dispatch will send an ambulance service to you based on location of the call, availability of ambulances, and other factors. To schedule a non-emergency, call (217) 331-0053.

Which Hospital, will you take me to?

As much as possible, we try to honor a patient’s request for a particular hospital. However, a patient’s condition and reason for transport will also play a role in choosing our destination. For example, we typically transport burn patients to Memorial Medical Center’s Regional Burn Center, while pediatric emergencies go to St. John’s Children’s Hospital. For trauma patients, St. John’s Hospital and Memorial Medical Center have both been designated as Level 1 trauma center.

Will you bill my insurance company for me?

Yes. When we have the correct information available, we will bill your insurance company on your behalf. If you’ve recently used our services, please ensure that the insurance information we have on file is accurate.

Does Medicare cover the sevices you provide?

In many cases, yes. Medicare will cover emergency medical transport services. However, when we transport non-emergency, your Medicare coverage may not apply. If Medicare does not pay, the patient will be responsible for the charges incurred.

I can't pay my bill in full right now. Do you accept payments?

Yes. We will work with you to create a payment plan that you can afford. Please contact our billing representative by calling (217) 535-0100, or Visit our Billing page for more information.
